Crotoxin has been detoxified with gamma radiation in order to improve crotalic antiserum production. Nevertheless, present knowledge of the biological characteristics of irradiated crotoxin is insufficient to propose it as an immunizing agent. Crotoxin is known to increase the emotional state of rats and to decrease their exploratory behavior (Moreira EG, Nascimento N, Rosa GJM, Rogero JR and Vassilieff VS (1996) Brazilian Journal of Medical and Biological Research, 29: 629-632). Therefore, we decided 1) to evaluate the effects of crotoxin in the social interaction test, which has been widely used for the evaluation of anxiogenic drugs, and 2) to determine if irradiated crotoxin induces behavioral alterations similar to those of crotoxin in the social... |

Feeding motivation is one major indicator of fish welfare and an investigation on the link between feed demand, growth and physiological variables in sea bass juveniles was developed. A computerized on-demand feeding system coupled with a PIT tag monitoring device was used to continuously record for 219 days the triggering activity of 150 individuals (initial average body weight 131.6 +/- 1.80 g and coefficient of variation 16.8%). Each group was held in 400 1 tanks at 22.2 +/- 1.5 degrees C and light regime was 16:8 LD. In all the tanks, 89% of the fish actuated the trigger, but only two or three fish accounted for 45% of the total triggering activity. These few high-triggering individuals had a transient higher growth i.e. at the time an individual was... |

The objective of this study was to analyze the behavior of three genetic groups of confined goats by image monitoring using nine unneutered goats of the Azul, Graúna and Moxotó genotypes. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement (genetic groups × periods - morning, afternoon and night), with three replications. Animals were monitored by video cameras placed at the ceiling of each stall for 10 days. There were interaction factors in the frequency of behavioral categories: interaction with the trough, self-cleaning, standing bipedally, social interaction, and other activities. Azul, Graúna and Moxotó native goats kept in the same environment under the same system of containment and feeding show different frequencies... |
